Speed Ramp and Combination Signs

Give drivers a clear message to SLOW DOWN!

Reflective warning signs for speed control the DfT layout gives drivers a clear message telling drivers how to drive safely on your car parks, roads or site. We supply a complete range of highway warning signs and in many combinations and sizes. Manufactured to BS873 and current EU regulations, our traffic signs use highly reflective signface material for maximum visibility 24/7 even in poor weather conditions.

Designed for a long life:
the sign faces are UV stable. Drivers will see the traffic signs clearly, day or night. Ophthalmologists claim a driver’s vision can be impaired for up to 30 seconds before their eyes adjust fully to changed light conditions. If you hold a drivers licence you will know what these DfT traffic signs mean.

Post mounted aluminium traffic signs are strengthened with channelling for use with posts and clips. The steel traffic posts have a tough grey plastic coating (as used on highways) and a top cap.

TP1
posts mount traffic signs with a 2.2 metre clearance from the bottom of the sign to ground level.
TP2 posts mount the signs a metre high, at driver’s eye level.
TP3 posts mount the signs 1.5 metres from ground level.

Please note that our wall mounted aluminium traffic signs are un-drilled (unless requested) for mounting on to brickwork, concrete, cladding, most wall and flat surfaces.

Signs can be fitted to existing posts and lighting columns using various size clips and stainless steel banding. Please state if signs are to be fixed back to back, for more information please call 0121 446 4433

Product FAQs

Why use reflective traffic signs? It is an important safety feature that the driver can see the warning signs in all weather conditions, day or night.

Are these the same signs as used on the highway? All the designs and layouts are similar to the DfT specifications. We offer a larger range of warning signs in a much wider range of sizes to suit all “off highway“ sites.

The sign we need for our site is not shown! Contact our sales team (0121 446 4433) with your enquiry for special signs. We use the latest digital printing and CAD machines. Our usual answer is “no problem”.

Can I fax or email a sketch for a quote? We work from simple sketches to detailed drawings. Once the sign layout and design is in our computer we can email a scaled colour proof for your approval and instruction.

Control traffic flow and reduce driver's speed

Extra wide Smart Ramp will slow traffic down to speeds of 10 or 15 m.p.h. but unlike some of the sharp and narrow ramps, the extra wide Smart Ramp is designed to be comfortable as possible for the driver and passengers when driven over at the correct speed.

The metre wide (drive-over) Smart Ramp is the widest available on the European market and gives all the benefits to a concrete or asphalt jelly mould shaped constructed ramp but with the convenience and safety of bolt down solid rubber ramp.

Long design life, over 25 years, for all types of traffic large and small, including 48 tonnes HGVs. Each section of the Smart Ramp is moulded in a very tough high impact rubber, reinforced with carbon for maximum strength. The Smart Ramp can be simply assembled on site in distinctive black and yellow hazard warning pattern for maximum visual impact 24/7.

Highly reflective yellow or white panels
on the Smart ramp are an important safety feature, giving approaching drivers maximum warning of the ramp at all times, including night time or even in very poor driving conditions.

Fast Installation and trouble free; there are four fixing points in each of per 500mn wide sections of the ramp. There is a proven fixing system, large fixing bolts, plugs and washers are supplied that are designed to take the loading and get a secure fit. Fitting a Smart ramp can be carried out live without expensive road closures. No special tools needed just a powered masonry drill; it all takes less than an hour.

For extra safety and a professional finish, each ramp is finished with solid rubber end caps; if possible leave a small gap at each end of installed Smart ramps for gully cleaning and road maintenance.

Product FAQs

What are the benefits of an extra wide ramp?
The DfT approved shape is designed to slow down traffic safely with minimum discomfort to drivers.

Are these ramps good value for money compared with the other ramps on the market? Yes. Solid rubber has a much longer service life. Remember vehicle tyres are still not made from plastic new or recycled just high-grade rubber.

Will I need reflective warning signage to be installed on my site? Yes. Drivers need clear direction as to speed limits and speed ramps on site. Warning signs will inform drivers to take responsibility for their driving and the correct signage is a very important feature. Installing reflective DfT designed traffic signs will help to get this important message across.

Are speed ramps approved by the Health and Safety Executive? Yes. In general, they advise that if you cannot segregate pedestrians from traffic with dedicated walkways and barriers, the recommendation is that you install speed ramps to help enforce a safe speed limit on the site.

Product FAQs

How hard wearing is a PVC bump compared to EPDM rubber?
Very difficult question to answer, rubber is more expensive than PVC which is always a factor. However despite improve technology we are still all driving around on rubber tyres, which I think speaks volumes.

My advice is for high volume and heavy traffic is that I would choose from our range of solid EPDM rubber speed bumps and absorb the extra capital cost which will be balanced out with the longer service life.

BART Speed Ramps

Calm traffic safely and reduce the risk of accidents

The heavily ribbed BART ramp was inspired after talking to our customers. Some people wanted the toughest solid rubber speed ramp in the world, something that you could typically install in the tough environment of a waste transfer station where 100’s of fully laden HGVs would arrive and depart everyday. However we had to strike a note of caution, increasing the height of the ramp seemed a logical step, but virtually all sites will have some cars and small vans driving around. Very few ‘off the highway’ locations are purely for HGV use.

So the height of the BART ramp was fixed at 70mm high, the next step was to make the appearance of the speed ramp as heavily ribbed as possible. We were well aware that most drivers slowed down with their eyesight and overall awareness as they approached ramps. Drivers did not judge the effectiveness of a speed ramp by driving over at speed and then slowing down next time, more likely they came to the conclusion to slow down by looking at the ramp as they approached!

The solid rubber BART speed ramp is designed for safe speeds on site of 5 to 10mph.
The heavily ribbed rubber surface gives all drivers the maximum visual warning and you can install this type of speed ramp with confidence in any location.

There is a choice of very proven fixings for a fast installation. The standard surface mounted plate with anchor bolts and nylon fixing plugs or the BART ramp can be drilled through the top and concealed fixed with the anchor bolt inside the ramp. Both fixing systems work on concrete, asphalt or block surfaces.

Modular Speed Ramps

Reduce speed and dramatically reduce risk of accidents

Modular Speed Bumps have been developed over our company’s 40 years’ experience in traffic safety. Reduce your site traffic speed down to 5 to 10 m.p.h. and dramatically reduce the risk of accidents. Speed Bumps are manufactured in carbon re-inforced rubber for a long life.  Supplied in black and yellow sections the correct safety hazard warning colours.

Each section has integral red cats’ eyes for maximum visibility for drivers, day and night and even in poor weather conditions. Fast installation simple bolt down design: Speed Bumps ramps are supplied with a proven fixing kit pack designed by our company for asphalt, concrete or block surfaces, even tarmac with a chemical resin pack.

Solid rubber Speed Bumps have deep ribbed surfaces for extra grip and the system includes bright yellow end caps. Please note that it is recommended to use our reflective warning signs to clearly advise oncoming drivers of the correct safe speed for your site.

Speed Bumps ramps can be installed in
large retail parks, educational and manufacturing sites, hospitals and most “off highway” locations. Speed Bumps are supplied in sections that can be quickly assembled and laid in position. Drivers need to see the ramps day and night: each Speed Bump section has bright red reflectors to give drivers maximum warning that they are approach. Changing light conditions and driving in poor weather makes the integral reflectors a very important safety feature.

No special tools to install a ramp: A powerful masonry drill is needed to drill 4 holes per section and 2 holes per end cap. It is important to drill 14mm holes in concrete or block surfaces and 12/13mm holes in softer surfaces such as asphalt and tarmac. All holes should be drilled to a depth of 100mm.

Speed Bump ramps can be installed fast: When the location has been established, assemble the sections for a final check. Make sure the Speed Bump ramp has been assembled in a straight line. You will find it easy to mark the position of the fixing holes with a drill bit and then remove the section and drill each of the holes to a depth of 100mm. Please note if you are drilling blocks, make sure you use a new and sharp masonry drill bit.

A proven design: The Speed Bump design has been tested on sites worldwide to give you a trouble free service life. Our ramps take all types of vehicles including HGVs.

SpeedStopper ramps can be installed very quickly; it takes just a few minutes. Please note that for kerb-to-kerb locations, leave a small gap (100mm) at each end cap of the ramp for drainage and road gully cleaning. We cut our ramps, free of charge, to the exact length to suit your site, e.g. 4.85 metres, including end caps, making sure you get a perfect fit every time.

Choice of fixings options:

  1. Our most popular fixing kit pack is the plate fix. We pre-drill the ramp at approx metre centres and supply the fixing bolts, plugs and amber reflectors, an important safety feature.
  2. The next choice is a top concealed fix where the fixing holes are drilled through the top of the ramp; please remember this version does not include a reflector.
  3. We also have tamper proof security collars that can be hammered on to the bolt heads of the plate fix version.
  4. We can also supply a version that can be bonded to concrete floor, call 0121 446 4433 to ask for details.

Illustrated installation instructions for our range of speed ramps are available, please email sales@hazard.co.uk and request a copy.

Product FAQs

What is the maximum length of our speed ramps? In one piece 5.50 metres, we cut to size free of charge and ship ramps of any length to suit any road width, car park or site layout.

Why use long lengths of rubber ramp instead of small blocks assembled on site? Joints are kept to a minimum making for a stronger and longer lasting speed ramp and installation is done in minutes.

Heavy-duty plastic modular ramps are on the market. Do they work? Yes, for a limited time, it depends on traffic volumes and weights travelling over the ramps. Remember, car tyres are still made in rubber never plastic. Most of these types of low cost budget speed ramp products are moulded in recycled plastic, a material NOT designed to give a long service life.

Product FAQs

Why rubber speed bumps?
All concrete and asphalt speed ramps have scarred where vehicles have grounded as the drive over. Made from road material they must be produced in situ and typically are very wide to drive over. Visibility is also poor because the painted marking will wear very quickly. Our invention back in the early 70’swas the idea of using tyre grade rubber to manufacture in our factory a compact speed bump.

Will the rubber speed bumps slow my traffic down?
Yes, most drivers will slow down and pass over our ramps safely and sometimes it’s as simple as the vehicle in front slows a driver down. To be effective speed bumps and warning signs must be seen 24/7 in all weathers…

Are these speed ramps safe?
Our uniform design and using good quality rubber set the standard for speed bumps to enforce and help control traffic speeds with the goal of not damaging any vehicles. At only 75mm high our SpeedStopper® speed bumps are designed to be much more effective than DfTspeed ramps and speed cushions built at a staggering 100mm high.
